Rush and Tatami Mat Edges—Yesterday’s traditions inherited and translated for use today

Tatami culture has been an integral part of Japanese lifestyle since ancient times.
The traditional techniques have largely been handed down for use in the present day.
The distinctive-yet-gentle aroma and texture
that the rush grass provides imbues the mats with a certain comfort.

Rush products

In the 19th century, rush products from Kurashiki were considered a quintessential Japanese export commodity.
Even today, the superior processing techniques result in a variety of products, including mats, coasters, and slippers.

These Japanese organic products boast
both beautiful colors and an attractive appearance.
Only the longest grasses are used as raw material,
with no mudding or surface processing performed.

Before materials are even brought to the loom,
the rush grass is carefully cut and screened.
This allows for beautiful products that can only be created by hand.
Simple designs are used to highlight the elegance
of not only the weave but also the raw grass material.

Tatami mat edges

Kurashiki’s tatami mat edge fabrics are the result of thin fabric technologies cultivated locally.
Whereas originally designed to protect the edges of a tatami mat, these fabrics have gained popularity in various new applications.

One of Only a Few Areas Where Tatami Mat Edges Are Produced

The history of tatami mat edges can be traced directly to Japan’s tatami culture.
Kurashiki City’s Kojima area is the source of roughly 80% of Japan’s tatami mat edge fabrics,
making the area home to globally exclusive techniques.
Even though advances in weaving polyethylene and polypropylene have come about,
traditional cotton weaving methods are inherited from cotton thread-making.
The edges are carefully aligned by the experts operating
the machines in order to create a refined product.

Over 1000 Color and Pattern Combinations

Tatami mat edges are generally associated with subdued colors and designs.
Currently, a wide variety of colors and patterns have been developed.
The wide variety of choices for tatami mat edge patterns
have brought the edges themselves into the spotlight with the material also being
used for accessory products such as card cases and coin purses.
Tatami mat edges have also become popular for use as handmade materials.
